MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team won three straight sets to edge Minnesota Crookston, 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21), Friday evening at Taylor Center.
With the win, the Mavericks snap a two match losing streak and improve to 10-8 (4-6 NSIC) on the season. With the loss, the Golden Eagles drop to 4-14 (1-9 NSIC) overall.
After exchanging points to open the match, Minnesota State captured its first lead of the night, 16-15, after an attack error. The Mavericks followed it up with a kill from
Jackie Jones, 17-15, to force a Minnesota Crookston timeout. Minnesota State increased its edge to four, 23-19, after a
Morgan Olson kill. However, the Golden Eagles used a late surge with six unanswered points to steal the frame, 25-23.
In the second stanza, the Mavericks jumped to a 10-6 advantage after back-to-back aces from
Micayla Porter. Minnesota State continued to ride momentum pushing its lead to six, 16-10, after Porter set up
Ashton Lee for a blistering kill. The Mavericks went on to hold off the Golden Eagles, 25-19, and lock the match, 1-1.
After two sets, Olson led the Mavericks a team-best eight kills while
Mara Quam contributed a match-best 10 digs. Minnesota State posted a .235 hitting percentage in comparison to Minnesota Crookston's .148.
In the third frame, the Mavericks stole a two point edge after
Autumn Risch found a rhythm with two straight service aces to make the score 13-11. The Golden Eagles answered to deadlock the set a 15. The Mavericks then went on to establish a three point lead, 19-16, following an
Anissa Janzig kill. Minnesota State took the third set, 25-20.
In the fourth and final stanza, the Mavericks took control with an early four point edge, 14-10, after a 4-1 run highlighted by a Risch service ace. The Golden Eagles continued to battle tying the frame at 19. After Minnesota Crookston captured two quick points, Minnesota State closed the set with five unanswered points to seal the win, 25-21, and the match, 3-1.
The Mavericks held the edge in kills (55-45) and assists (50-45) while the Golden Eagles held the advantage in digs (50-45).
Jones paced the Mavericks with 12 kills and 10 digs. Olson also reached double-figures in kills with 12. Porter handed out a team-best 21 assists while Quam added a match-high 18 digs to round out the top performers.
Minnesota State returns to action tomorrow hosting Bemidji State. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
