Mankato, Minn --- On a rainy and windy Sunday afternoon at The Pitch, No. 13 Minnesota State soccer played Bemidji State to a 0-0 draw in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
The first half proved to be a defensive one. The Mavericks (8-1-1, 6-0-1 NSIC) outshot the Beavers (8-0-1, 6-0-1 NSIC) 7-2, and neither team found the back of the net. The best scoring opportunity for the Mavericks came just 23 seconds into the match when junior forward
Julia Zach got behind the defense and fired a shot that hit high up off the right post.
Defense would continue to dominate throughout the second half as both teams struggled to find a rhythm on offense. The Mavericks were forced to go down one player after one of their players was disqualified from the match for a second yellow card at the 88:07 mark. With the game still scoreless at the end of regulation, the match went to overtime.
Both teams had chances in overtime, but were unable to score and the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Freshman forward
Molly Sarafolean had the Mavericks' best scoring chance in overtime. In the second overtime period, Sarafolean sent a shot, in the 106th minute, towards the upper-right corner of the net that was tipped away by the Beavers' goalkeeper.
Minnesota State held a 24-6 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ryann Rydeen (4-0-1) earned her fifth consecutive shutout — stopping all three shots she faced.
Anna Fobbe (4-0-1) started in net for the Beavers and made nine saves.
Minnesota State plays its next match against Wayne State at 2:00 P.M. on Friday in Wayne, Nebraska.
