No. 11 Minnesota State Soccer Blanks Wayne State 4-0 for Eighth Consecutive Shutout

Wayne, Neb. --- No. 11 Minnesota State soccer defeated Wayne State 4-0 for its eighth consecutive shutout in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match on Friday afternoon.

Minnesota State's (9-1-1, 7-0-1 NSIC) eight shutouts is one shy of the program record of nine, which was achieved in 2011. The Mavericks now have 10 shutouts on the season and have held their opponents to two goals combined. Minnesota State held Wayne State (3-4-4, 2-3-3 NSIC) to five shots, including three shots on goal, in the match.

The Maverick offense did the rest – scoring once in the first half before scoring three more times after halftime to put the match out of reach.

Senior midfielder Lexi Pszanka scored her third goal of the season – all game-winning goals – in the 30th minute to put Minnesota State up 1-0. Sophomore forward Dakota Wendell tallied her first assist, and point, of the season on the play.

In the second half, the Mavericks had a burst where they scored three goals in just over three minutes of play to make the final score 4-0. Junior forward Morgan Cottew scored her third goal of 2017 in the 69th minute. Freshman defender Molly Riley garnered her first-collegiate assist, and point, on the play. After junior midfielder Maddy Burandt scored her second goal of 2017 in the 70th minute, Riley volleyed a pass from sophomore defender Anna Mixon into the back of the net for her first-collegiate goal. Mixon picked up her first assist, and point, as a Maverick on the play.

Minnesota State held a 19-5 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Taylor Livermore (5-0-0) recorded her fifth shutout in as many starts this season.

Sophomore Rachel Grisham (2-4-2) played the first 71:50 in net for the Wildcats. Freshman Sydney Rogers came on in relief of Grisham to finish the match.

Minnesota State returns home for an NSIC match against Augustana at 1:00 p.m., on Sunday at The Pitch.
