CROOKSTON, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team overwhelmed Minnesota Crookston, 82-57, at Lysaker Gymnasium Friday night.
With the win, the Mavericks move to 11-8, including a 7-8 NSIC record. With the loss, Minnesota Crookston falls to 6-13, including a 6-9 league record. Minnesota State has now won four of its last five games.
Sammie Delzotto got off to a hot start for the Mavericks banking two shots early to take 4-0 lead. The teams would then trade baskets to lock the game at nine by the 5:26 mark. Later in the quarter, Minnesota State was able to establish a six point, 19-13, edge after
Rachel Shumski collected an offensive rebound and put it back for a layup.
Claire Ziegler then closed the quarter connecting on a jump shot to beat the buzzer increasing the Maverick lead to 25-17.
Minnesota State continued to find offense starting the second frame with a 6-2 run including four points contributed by
Karina Schroeder to make the score 31-19. The Golden Eagles struggled to convert their possessions into points throughout the second quarter after shooting only 33.3% in first half. The Mavericks took advantage and stretched its lead into double digits, 33-19, after Delzotto found
Mackenzie Dahl in the paint for a layup with 2:53 on the clock. Minnesota State led at the half, 39-29.
The Golden Eagles clawed back in the second half to cut the deficit down to nine, 51-42, after a made triple.
Logan Anderson responded on the next possession with a layup at the 4:46 mark. Following the media timeout, Minnesota Crookston once again drew within single digits ,53-45, after a made layup and free throw. However, Minnesota State then closed the quarter in commanding fashion with a 10-0 run highlighted by a Delzotto hoop from downtown. The Mavericks led after the third quarter, 63-45.
Minnesota State increased its lead to 20, 71-51, after
Taylor Drost netted a jumper with 6:01 remaining. Minnesota Crookston would not be able to chip the lead down any further as the Mavericks closed out the remaining time to pick up the 82-57 win.
Minnesota State held the edge in rebounds, 48-32, and steals, 11-4. Additionally, the Mavericks shot 43.1% from the field and the bench posted 29 points.
Ziegler led the Mavericks with a game-high 18 points and added five rebounds. Delzotto netted 15 points while senior
Britney Scherber contributed 12 points to round out the top performers.
The Mavericks return to action on tomorrow at Bemidji State. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
