BEMIDJI, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team topped Bemidji State, 75-64, Saturday afternoon at BSU Gymnasium.
With the win, the Mavericks move to 12-8, including a 8-8 NSIC record. With the loss, Bemdji State falls to 6-14, including a 3-13 league record. Minnesota State earns the 700th win in program history. Since 1966, MSU holds an all-time record of 700-594 (.541) overall.
Minnesota State got off to fast start for the second night in a row with the use of a full court press defense to create a 7-0 lead. The Beavers retaliated to pull within two, 9-7, by the 5:16 mark. The Mavericks then picked up the pace and grew its advantage into double digits, 17-7, after
Logan Anderson buried a three with 3:18 on the clock. Minnesota State led after one quarter of play, 20-10.
Bemidji State attacked back to come within six, 25-19, after a made three pointer. Anderson answered again for the Mavericks after
Claire Jordan found her on the perimeter for the basket to make the score 33-24 with 1:16 remaining in the half. Minnesota State headed to the locker room with a 33-28 advantage. The Mavericks shot 36.7% from the field (11-30) and 44.4% from downtown (4-9) while the Beavers shot 30.0% from the field (9-30) and 31.3% from three (5-16).
Following a Bemidji State layup, Minnesota State took control of the third quarter with a 8-0 run highlighted by
Sammie Delzotto connecting with
Claire Ziegler for a jumper to put the Mavericks up 11, 41-30, at the 7:35 mark. Later in the quarter, the Beavers constructed a 7-0 run of its own to chip the deficit down to six, 53-47, and force a Maverick timeout. Minnesota State led after three quarters, 56-50.
Both teams went cold offensively in the fourth quarter until Ziegler was able to drive the lane for a layup, 62-54, with 5:35 remaining. A few possessions later, Delzotto stole momentum with a triple to put the Mavericks up 11, 65-54, with 3:30 to play. Minnesota State went on to close out the remaining time and pick up its fifth win in its last six games.
The Mavericks held the edge in rebounds, 42-36, while both teams recorded four steals each. Additionally, Minnesota State shot 44.1% from the field and 42.1% from three point. The bench netted 15 points.
Senior
Britney Scherber led the Mavericks with team-high 18 points and two assists. Senior
Karina Schroeder grabbed a team-best nine rebounds and netted 13 points while Ziegler also reached double digits with 14 points. Anderson rounded out the top performers with a career-high 12 points.
The Mavericks return to Taylor Center on Feb. 3 to host Minnesota Duluth. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
