St. Cloud, Minn. --- Minnesota State women's hockey allowed two first period goals to St. Cloud State and lost 2-1 in the first of a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn., on Friday afternoon.

St. Cloud State (7-16-2, 5-13-1-1 WCHA) got on the board first when senior defenseman Caroline Markstrom (3-2--5) scored a full-strength goal at 6:59 of the first. Senior forward Payge Pena (3-5--8) and freshman forward Kayla Friesen (4-5--9) assisted on the play. Neither St. Cloud State or Minnesota State (6-18-2, 3-15-1-0 WCHA) scored for the rest of the period and shots on goal were even (6-6) through the first 20:00.

Senior goaltender Brianna Quade (3-13-2) made 11 saves in the second period – 18 for the game – but the Huskies doubled their lead to 2-0 when junior forward Alyssa Erickson (7-3--10) scored at 8:21 of the period. Sophomore forward Hannah Potrykus (6-4--10) assisted on the play. The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Huskies at the end of two periods.

The Mavericks fought back in the beginning of the third period. Senior defenseman Anna Fiegert (1-2--3) stopped a Husky breakout attempt at the blue line and chipped the puck towards the slot. Junior forward Sara Bustad (2-1--3) gained control of the puck and scored past St. Cloud State's freshman netminder Janine Alder (7-13-2), who made 25 saves, to make the score 2-1 in favor of St. Cloud State.

Minnesota State kept attacking – outshooting St. Cloud State 11-2 in the third period – but were unable to score as time ran out on the Mavericks' comeback attempt.

Both the Mavericks and Huskies finished 0-for-2 on the power play, and the Mavericks held a 26-20 edge in shots.
