Mavericks Compete in First Day of National Indoor Championships

Kyran Stewart finished 6th in the 200m prelims in advancing to tomorrow's national championship finals

   Pittsburg, Kan. --- A foursome from the Minnesota State's men's track and field team were in action Friday at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships taking place in Pittsburg, Kan.

Junior Myles Hunter established a national championships meet record in 60-meter hurdles with his time of 7.67 clocking in as the fastest time in today's preliminary round.  Hunter, who is making his third appearance at the national indoor championship meet, will compete in tomorrow's finals.

Freshman Jacob Gourley turned in a time of 6.86 in finishing 15th in the 60m prelims. He competed in the 200m prelims where he finished with a time of 22:05 in finishing 14th.

Senior Kyran Stewart, who is representing the Mavericks for the second time at the national indoor championships, posted a time of 6.81 in placing 11th in the 60m prelims.  He advanced to tomorrow's finals in the 200m with the sixth-fasted preliminary time (21.39)

Senior Richard Wilhite, who was making his first appearance at the NCAA DII national indoor championships, placed 12th in 200m prelims with a time of 21.81.

Joining Hunter and Stewart tomorrow in finals action are of pair of Maverick high jumpers in Frank Veldman and Jeff DeCock.
