Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla. --- The Minnesota State softball team closed out its final day in Florida at The Spring Games with two more wins. The pitching shined again on Thursday for the Mavericks as they defeated Edinboro 2-1 in eight innings and Ohio Dominican, 2-0.
Sophomore
Libby Bemis and junior
Coley Ries combined to allow just three hits in 15 innings on Thursday.
In game one
Libby Bemis [5-2] picked up her fifth win of the season against Edinboro, as she pitched all eight innings, while recording three strikeouts and allowing just two hits. Carley Nasca [2-1] pitched for Edinboro and fell victim to the Mavericks as she allowed nine hits in 7.2 innings pitched.
MSU scored its first run in the bottom of the third. Senior
Tatum Klein led-off the inning with a bunt single and eventually sole second afterwards. Due up next for the Mavericks was freshman
McKenzie Paap and she singled up the middle which allowed Klein to advance to third. The play was for from over though as MSU took advantage of a Fighting Scots error which allowed Klein to score the Mavericks first run of the game.
All game Bemis held Edinboro in check as she got the Fighting Scots first 10 batters out. Bemis walked the 11th batter she faced and Edinboro took advantage of it as its next batter, Haley Struebing, doubled home base runner Olivia Jankowski to even up the score at 1-1.
MSU had a couple of chances to end the game in regulation in both the sixth and seventh innings. The Mavericks left two base runners on third and second in the sixth inning with one out. In the seventh inning MSU was able to load the bases with just one out but again was unable to record the game-winning run.
In extra innings Bemis successfully got out of a jam in the top of the eighth as the Fighting Scots had a potentially game-winning run sitting at third with one out.
In the bottom of the eighth, sophomore
Alyssa Rickels began at second base for MSU and eventually scored the game-winning run. Sophomore
Kelly Grove brought her home when she hit a two-out, game-winning RBI single to right field to lift MSU past Edinboro.
In game two
Coley Ries [8-3] threw a one-hit, complete game shutout to help the Mavericks defeat Ohio Dominican, 2-0. Ries also struck out 12 Panthers batters, which already marks as her fifth double-digit strikeout performance this season.
MSU scored a run apiece in the fifth and six innings. In the fifth inning, freshman
Cori Kennedy led-off with a single.
Alyssa Rickels came in for Kennedy as a pinch runner and eventually scored the Mavericks first run after MSU sac bunted Rickels to third base on the next two at-bats. The sacrifices paid off as Rickels came racing home when ODU recorded a passed ball.
In the sixth
Tatum Klein began with a leadoff single and later stole second base. A few batters later, junior
Dana Mogren tallied a RBI double to bring Klein across the plate.
It was a very successful trip to Florida for the Mavericks as they went 9-1 over the past week. MSU currently owns a 13-5 overall record.
Next up for MSU will be the Apple Market Classic hosted by Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo. The Mavericks will play six games against MIAA opponents, starting with Washburn and Missouri Southern State on Friday, March 18. Game times are set for 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
