Box Score Mankato, Minn --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team was able to notch the game's first goal but could not sustain as Bemidji State came away with a 2-1 victory in Saturday's contest in Downtown Mankato.
After a back-and-fourth period of action, neither team was able to bury the puck in the first frame. Minnesota State goaltender,
Brianna Quade stopped all nine Beaver shots she faced while Bemidji State netminder,
Brittni Mowat recorded eight saves.
Minnesota State grabbed the game's first lead at 4:01 of the second period. On the power play, junior defenseman,
Anna Fiegert wound up from the left point and blasted the puck past Mowat for her fourth tally of the season.
Anna Keys and
Corbin Boyd would collect helpers on the play. Just two minutes and 56 seconds later, Bemidji State countered
with Lauren Miller grabbing her own rebound and sliding it underneath Quade at 6:57 to cap off the period's scoring.
The Beavers scored the go-ahead goal and what proved to be the game-winner at 14:29 of the third period when
Kristin Huber came down the left side and fired a snap shot up top.
Quade came away from Saturday's game with 25 saves while Mowat stopped 19 of 20 Maverick shots. Minnesota State's power play went one-for-two on the day while BSU did not have any man-advantage chances.
The Mavericks will travel to Madison, Wis., next weekend as the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs have been determined. The eighth-seeded Mavericks will take on the first-seeded Badgers next weekend for a best-of-three series at LaBahn Arena starting next Friday.
