Box Score MANKATO, Minn --- Seventh-Rated Bemidji State jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never trailed in skating to a 3-1 win over Minnesota State in a women's Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played in Mankato Friday.
The visiting Beavers capitalized on a Minnesota State turnover when
Kaitlyn Tougas intercepted a Maverick pass in Bemidji State's end and skated for a two-on-one opportunity up the right side. She found
Stephanie Anderson in the slot and Anderson tapped the puck in past Minnesota State goaltender,
Brianna Quade for a shorthanded goal at 16:17 of the first period. The Beavers would go on to carry the 1-0 lead into the second period with a shots-on-goal advantage of 11-8.
It became a 2-0 Bemidji State lead at 10:29 of the second when
Summer Thibodeau came around the right side of the net and find a gap between the post and Quade's pad for her third goal of the season. Minnesota State responded 22 seconds later at 10:51. Freshman defenseman
Lena Duesterhoeft slid the puck across to
Anna Fiegert who ripped a shot from the point that
Hannah Davidson redirecting the shot through the legs of Beaver netminder Brittni Mowat. The goal by Davidson, her eight of the year, cut the lead to one as the Mavericks finished the period outshooting the Beavers by a nine-to-seven margin.
The Mavericks battled to find the game-tying marker in the final period, but came up empty as Mowat stopped all seven shots fired her way. BSU, which extended it winning streak over the Mavericks to eight games with the win, added an insurance empty net tally at 19:31 with Tougas scoring her eighth goal of the season.
The Mavericks, who fall to 3-26-4 overall on the year with the loss, were zero-for-two in power play chances in the game. Bemidji State, which owned a 31-24 advantage in shots on goal and stands 21-9-3 for the season, was also zero-for-two with the man advantage.
The two teams wrap up the 2015-16 regular season Saturday with a 3:07 p.m. face-off scheduled at Minnesota State's Verizon Wireless Center.
