Brianna Quade made 25 saves and junior forward
Lindsey Coleman scored her fourth goal of the season, but Minnesota State women's hockey lost to Union 2-1 on Friday night at Frank L. Messa Rink.
The Mavericks (5-14-1) and the Dutchwomen (3-16-0) played a tightly contested first period with the shots 10-8 in favor of Union. Neither team scored, but the Dutchwomen had a goal disallowed at 2:00 of the period. A Union defenseman took a shot from the point that was deflected by a forward -- standing in the slot -- and into the Maverick net. After video review, it was ruled that the puck was deflected by a high stick -- keeping the game scoreless. The Mavericks successfully killed two Dutchwomen penalties and the game was tied 0-0 at the first intermission.
Minnesota State successfully killed four Union power plays and the Mavericks outshot the Dutchwomen 11-6 in the second period, but freshman forward Haley Shugart (6-2--8) scored a full strength goal at 15:58 of the period to put Union up 1-0. Senior forward Alli Devins (1-4--5) and freshman forward Cheyenne Harris (1-5--6) assisted on the play. The Mavericks outshot the Dutchwomen 19-16 through two periods.
Minnesota State had four more penalties in the third period, which gave Union a total of nine power plays on the night. While on a five-on-three power play, Harris scored to put Union up 2-0 at 10:42 in the third period. Junior defenseman Caitlyn McLaren (3-5--8) and Devins assisted on the play. The Mavericks successfully killed 8-of-9 Dutchwomen power plays on the evening.
The Mavericks fought back as Coleman (4-4--8) scored at 12:16 of the third period to cut the deficit in half with the Mavericks trailing 2-1. Sophomore forwards
Jordan McLaughlin (2-4--6) and
Emily Antony(4-7--11) assisted on the play. However, Minnesota State was unable to find the equalizer and time ran out on their comeback attempt.
Quade (3-9-2) made 25 saves for the Mavericks, while freshman Kate Spooner (3-9-0) made 28 saves for the Dutchwomen.
Minnesota State finished 0-for-1 on the power play.
Minnesota State and Union conclude their two-game nonconference series on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CDT at Frank L. Messa Rink.
