Princeton, N.J. --- Princeton University scored the game's first five goals en route to a 6-1 win over visiting Minnesota State in a men's college hockey nonconference game Friday.
Princeton came out flying from the opening face-off, outshooting the Mavericks 17-9 and tallying a pair of even-strength goals in the first period.
The first goal, scored at 10:55, came on a rebound chance off the stick of
Ryan Kuffner. Minnesota State netminder
Cole Huggins made a nice save off a shot from
Garrett Skrbich, but the Mavericks failed to clear the rebound and
Ben Foster capitalized, putting the puck into the net at 18:50 and the score stood 2-0 at the end of 20 minutes of play.
The host Tigers took control of the contest in the second period with three unanswered tallies.
Eric Robinson one-timed a pass from across the slot from
Tommy Davis at 9:16 to make it a 3-0 Princeton lead. It became a four-goal deficit at 10:33 on a deflection by
Liam Grande and at that point,
Jason Pawloski replaced Huggins in the Minnesota State net. Skrbich's first goal of the season at 14:56, which came after Pawloski stopped his breakaway chance, gave Princeton a 5-0 lead after two periods of play.
A shot from the wing by
David Hallisey leaked past Pawloski for a Princeton power play goal at 10:21 of the third period. Senior defenseman
Sean Flanagan's wrist shot from the point beat Princeton netminder
Colton Phinney high on the stickside at 12:29 for his second goal of the season and the game ended with Providence claiming the 6-1 win.
Princeton, which has now gone 7-1-0 in its last eight games, owned a 37-27 advantage in shots on goal and converted on two-of-seven power play chances in the contest. The Mavericks finished the game with a zero-for-four ledger with the man advantage.
Now 10-7-2 overall for the season, the Mavericks close out the two-game series with Princeton (7-7-1) Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. CST face-off scheduled.
