Mavericks Roll in 4-0 Win Over Wayne State

Kiana Nickel Moves into Sole Possession of Sixth Place on Career Points List

Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State women's soccer scored three goals in the first 27:00  and rolled to a 4-0 win over Wayne State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match on Friday afternoon at The Pitch.

Senior Kiana Nickel gained sole possession of sixth place on the Mavericks' career points list with 91.

The Mavericks (6-3-1, 5-2-0 NSIC) received first half goals from freshman Alesha Duccini, sophomore Morgan Cottew, and Nickel.

Duccini gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead over Wayne State (6-3-2, 3-3-2 NSIC) in the eighth minute with her fifth goal of the season -- tying her with freshman Taylor Kenealy for the most goals by a Maverick rookie this year.

Cottew, who has scored in six of the Mavericks last seven matches, continued her offensive surge by scoring in the 23rd minute. She leads the team in goals (7), points (18) and is tied for the team lead with four assists. Her goal expanded the Maverick lead to 2-0. Cottew also had two assists for a game-high four points.

Nickel scored her fifth goal of the season -- tied with Duccini and Kenealy for the second-most scores behind Cottew -- in the 27th minute. Nickel's goal, which made the score 3-0,  gave her 91 career points -- the sixth most in program history.

In the second half, freshman Julia Mixon scored at 63:14 -- her first-career goal -- increasing the Maverick lead to 4-0.

Sophomore Abby Hausken recorded her second assist of the season.

The Minnesota State backline, which was led by sophomore Morgan Seemuth did the rest -- holding Wayne State to eight shots and only two on goal. The Maverick offense attempted 18 shots with eight on goal.

Freshman Alexa Rabune (3-3-1) made two saves to earn the shutout victory. It is Rabune's third shutout this season.

Kylie Comba (6-3-2) made four saves in goal for Wayne State.

The Mavericks, who have won five of their last six matches, return to action at 1:00 p.m., on Sunday in an NSIC match with Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D.
