Mavericks Skate to 3-3 Tie vs. Ohio State Friday

Linemates Antony, McLaughlin, and Coleman all record two points in tie

Box Score MANKATO, Minn.---  The Minnesota State women's hockey team skated their way to a 3-3 overtime tie Friday afternoon in Mankato. The Mavericks moved their record to 3-19-3 (0-17-3 WCHA) on the season while the Buckeyes moved to 7-17-1 (3-15-1 WCHA) after the tie.

In the first stanza of Friday afternoon's contest, the play was in Minnesota State's favor as the period was nearing its end.  With 2:13 remaining in the frame, Minnesota State was signaled for a fragile boarding infraction that put Ohio State on its first power-play of the day.  Just 46 seconds into the man-advantage, Ohio State's Curtis Kendall skated the puck behind the Minnesota State net where she tried to feed one of her fellow forwards out front, but ended up getting a lucky bounce with the puck ending up past Maverick netminder, junior Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.).  Then just under 45 seconds later, Erin Langermeier tapped in a puck that was in the middle of a scramble of the goal mouth in front of Quade, giving the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.  Minnesota State would take a 10-6 shots on goal advantage heading into the second frame.

Minnesota State's persistence paid off in the second period as they outshot the Buckeyes by a clip of 14-6 and outscored them 1-0 in the frame.  Halfway through the period at 12:14, freshman Jordan McLaughlin (Grand Rapids, Minn.) passed the puck up to sophomore Lindsey Coleman (Burnsville, Minn.) creating a two-on-one with linemate Emily Antony (Plymouth, Minn.)  Coleman slid the puck over to Antony in the slot who snapped a shot that bounced of off the chest of Buckeye goaltender, Alex LaMere and to the back of the twine.  Minnesota State took the shots on goal advantage into the total of 24-12, down by one on the scoreboard.

In the last regulation period, Minnesota State tied the game up twice as Mclaughlin made it 2-2 at the 13:45 mark on a slick give and go play with Antony.  Coleman also picked up another helper on the play.  About a minute and a half later, OSU took their second lead of the afternoon when Melani Moylan tallied her third marker of the season at 15:22.  Then with just 1:45 on the clock, freshman Megan Hinze (Carver, Minn.) ripped a slapper from the point. Sophomore defenseman Anna Keys (Cottage Grove, Minn.) picked up the rebound and backhand passed the puck out to sophomore Amanda Martin (Peoria, Ariz.) on the power-play with 1:45 to go in regulation.

In overtime, neither team was able to generate any scoring opportunities, though the Mavericks did hold an advantage in shots on goal in the period at 2-1.

In the shootout, it was Ohio State who made their mark, capitalizing on two of their extra-breakaway opportunities.  Keys was the only Maverick to put one by LaMere, sniping it over her shoulder.

In the end Minnesota State carried the shots on goal mark by a clip of 35-20, while Quade recorded 17 saves.  On special teams, the Mavericks generated one goal on four power-play chances compared to OSU's one-of-two mark.

The Mavericks will wrap up their series with the Buckeyes tomorrow afternoon in Mankato.  Puck drop at Verizon Wireless Center is slated for a 2:07 p.m. start.
