Crookston, Minn. --- The Minnesota State soccer team won its Northern Sun -eading seventh game with a 2-0 victory at Minnesota Crookston Sunday.
With the win, Minnesota State increases its record to 7-1-0 on the season and 5-0-0 in the Northern Sun. After the match, UMC's' record drops to 2-5-1 on the season and 2-3-0 against NSIC competition.
In the first frame of action, both teams' defenses game each squad a fighting chance as neither team was able to bury a goal. The Mavericks recorded eight shots in the first 45 minutes while the Golden Eagles were held to two.
At the end of the first half, senior goalkeeper Lauren Hoeppner (Lakeville, Minn.) had one save while Golden Eagle goalkeeper Lexie Gauger recorded six stops.
The second half of play featured a little more action as Minnesota State got on the board. At the 68:17 mark of the frame, Kiana Nickel (Wayzata, Minn.) took a pass from senior Korey Kronforst (Cary, Ill.) and booted it by the UMC  netminder. Just ten minutes later at 78:09, sophomore Laura Schwickerath (Ceder Falls, Iowa) was called upon to take a penalty kick due to a Golden Eagle infraction. Schwickrath ripped the ball past Gauger for her first marker of the season.
When the final buzzer sounded, Minnesota State outshot UMC by a 25-5 mark and 10-3 stance in shots on goal. UMC  did, however, lead in fouls through out the game posting 10 while Minnesota State recorded seven.
Hoeppner claimed the win, recording her sixth shutout of 2015 and saved all three shots she was challenged with. She also upped her record to 7-1-0 on the season.
MSU will take action next at they travel to Moorhead, Minn., to take on the Dragons of MSU-Moorhead, October 3rd at 12 p.m. Then the following day, the #13 Mavericks will travel to Aberdeen, S.D., to matchup vs. the Wolves of Northern State at 1:00 p.m.
