Mavericks tie Dutchwomen 2-2 in Season Opener

Both Goals Scored for Minnesota State Proved to be Firsts for Fiegert and Boyd

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team came from behind to tie, the Dutchwomen of Union College Friday evening.

With the tie, Minnesota State's record opens as 0-0-1 under new head coach John Harrington. In the first period of play, the Mavericks came out flying producing 13 shots while holding the Dutchwomen were held to four. Junior Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.) stopped all four shots she was faced with as both teams were held scoreless in the first frame.

In the second stanza, each team was able to find the back of the net., At the 12:12 mark of the period, Kathryn Tomaselli gave Union a 1-0 lead on the power-play, coming off of a rebound shot from Alli Devins and the second assist coming from Jessica Kaminsky. Just over four minutes later at 16:39 of the period, junior defenseman Anna Fiegert (Landshut, Germany) scored her first career goal as a Maverick. The goal came off of a face-off win by sophomore Hannah Davidson (Kincardine, Ont.) to senior Katie Johnson (Anoka, Minn.) who passed the puck over to Fiegert at the right point., At the end of two periods, the score was tied 1-1 with Minnesota State outshooting Union 35-22 combined through the two periods.

The third frame saw just as much action as the second as each team scored a goal a piece. Tomaselli was able to hit the twine for the second time of the night. The goal came at 4:18 of the frame in front of a screened Quade and was assisted by Devins and Elizabeth Otten. Later on, right before the period was about to expire, junior defenseman Sara Bustad (Stillwater, Minn.) found freshman forward Corbin Boyd (Minnetonka, Minn) in front of the goal mouth who put rubber past Dutchwomen goalie Melissa Black to tie the game at 2-2 with 1:48 left in the period., Both teams compiled seven shots each to close out regulation.

The overtime period saw four shots from Minnesota State as Union was held to just one.

In the end, Minnesota State out shot Union by a mark of 46-19, while Quade 17 Dutchwomen shots. Quade moved her career record to 1-8-1 as a Maverick.

MSU finished the game 1-7 on the power-play producing seven shots on the man advantage while Union was 2-4 and produced five shots on the power-play

Minnesota State will take on Union at 2:07 on Saturday to finish out the first series of the 2015-16 season at All Seasons Arena
