MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State soccer team won its first scrimmage match of the season by defeating Grand View University by a score of 5-1.
The scrimmage was played in three periods with the first periond lasting 45 minutes and the last two lasting 30 minutes a piece.
In the first period, Minnesota State got things rolling in the ninth minute of action when senior forward
Korey Kronforst (Cary, Ill) netted a pass from junior forward
Kiana Nickel (Wayzata, Minn.). The goal was waved off due to an offside infraction. Grand View took the lead just five minutes later after the ball deflected off of a Maverick defender in front of the net. MSU tied the match after junior forward
Dana Savino (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) was awarded a penalty kick due to a handball penalty in the box by a Vikings player.
In the second frame, Kronforst capitalized on a pass from the right side of the Viking box from senior forward
Jessica Bowe . The ball banked off of the left post and into the net, giving the Mavericks a 2-1 advantage heading into the final period.
In the final stanza, Minnesota State pulled away with three goals. The first came from freshman defense
Mackenzie Fray (Rockford, Ill) assisted from freshman forward
Morgan Cottew (Minneapolis, Minn.). The last two goals came off the foot of sophomore midfielder
Laura Schwickerath with both markers being assisted by freshman forward
Maddie Raley (Hudson, Wis.).
The Mavericks accumulated 30 shots in the match with 14 of them on goal. All four goal keepers logged minutes for Minnesota State with freshman
Taylor Livermore collecting four saves.
Both teams used a multitude of players in the scrimmage showcasing depth and versitility.
Minnesota State will continue action on Sunday for its second of three preseason matches of the season as it travels to St. Paul, Minn., to take on Hamline University. The match is slated for 5 p.m.                  Â
