EDMOND, Okla. — Minnesota State (1-0-0) secured a 2-1 victory over the University of Central Oklahoma (0-1-0) at Tom Thompson Field on Friday. The Mavericks capitalized on their scoring opportunities, despite being outshot 17-8 by the Bronchos.
"Extremely gritty performance by our ladies. Incredible energy throughout the entire roster gave us a huge boost," said Head Coach Brian Bahl." First games are always really challenging and going on the road for an opener is even more difficult. I was really proud of our effort, resilience and how together we were as a team."
"Even when we weren't at our best in moments, we supported and leaned on each other and found a way to win, and that's what it's all about. We certainly have a lot to work on but we showed tremendous heart tonight and this game helped us learn a lot about who we are and what we can be and it will play a big role in our development."
Lauren McAlpine played a crucial role by recording eight saves, effectively securing the win for the Mavericks. Meghan Przybilla scored the game-winning goal, finding the back of the net on her only shot. Ella Huettl added to the team's offensive effort by notching a goal with her sole shot on goal. Amara Smith contributed to the attack with an assist, complementing her one shot during the match.
The match began with the Mavericks getting off to a quick start as Huettl scored in the opening minute, assisted by Smith. This quick start set the tone for the Mavericks, who kept the pressure on the Bronchos throughout the first period.
MSU had a chance to extend its lead with a penalty kick by Meghan Sullivan, but the attempt was missed, keeping the score at 1-0. McAlpine made crucial saves to preserve the advantage, notably stopping a shot from Sami Allen in the 22nd minute.
As the half concluded, the Mavericks held on to their 1-0 lead, demonstrating strong defensive efforts while managing the game's pace.
The second period began with the Mavericks maintaining a strong defensive presence. McAlpine made a crucial save just seconds into the period, setting the tone for their resilient defense. However, the Bronchos broke through with a goal by Sophia Gaskins in the 49th minute, evening the score at 1-1.
Minnesota State responded well as Przybilla, assisted by Anna Stromberg, tallied a goal in the 70th minute to regain the lead. Despite several attempts from the Bronchos, McAlpine's goalkeeping ensured that the Mavericks held on to their advantage. The half closed with Minnesota State leading 2-1, securing the win.
Looking ahead, the Mavericks will face the University of Central Missouri on Friday, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m. CT at The Pitch in Mankato, Minnesota.
