No. 4 Minnesota State Falls Short at NSIC Tournament

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- Fourth-rated Minnesota State was eliminated from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament on Thursday after falling to Augustana and Northern State in Sioux Falls, S.D.

MSU fell to the Vikings in their first game of the day by a final of 4-2 before dropping tonight's elimination game to Northern State, 7-6.

The Mavericks and Vikings were scoreless through the first four innings, but Augustana was able to tally a run in the fifth inning. After loading the bases, Justin Warne hit a sacrifice fly to score one and tried to send another runner home as well but the Mavericks were able to stop him at home. Patrick Fiala added a solo home run as the Vikings took a 2-0 lead.

MSU was unable to score a run until senior Max Waletich hit a two run home run to tie up the score in the bottom of the eight. Neither team plated a run in the ninth and the game went into extra innings tied at two.

The Vikings scored two runs in the top of the tenth inning with one on a ground out. Then they hit back-to-back doubles to take a two run lead. The Mavericks couldn't get a base runner in the final half inning as they fell by a final of 4-2.

In the Maverick's second game of the day, they took an early 1-0 lead against Northern State after a sacrifice fly by Waletich that scored sophomore Eric Peterson. The Wolves came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third to take the lead, 2-1.

Junior Kyle Toth tied up the score in the third with a single up the middle to plate redshirt freshman Josh Wenzel. Later in the inning, senior Nolan Johnson put MSU ahead with a double down the left field line to bring home Peterson. The wolves came back in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead at 4-3 when Buddy Traxler hit a single up the middle, scoring two.

The Wolves increased their lead to 5-3 in the fourth, but MSU came back with rally to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth. Johnson grounded out to the shortstop but Peterson came home on the play. Redshirt freshman Luke Waldek hit an RBI single to left field to plate senior Connor McCallum and Wenzel followed that up with a chopper to third base but the throw was wide of first and Branstad was able to come home.

NSU regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning when Tyler Grippentrog hit a single to left field to score two more runs. The Mavericks were sent down in order in the ninth as they fell by a final score of 7-6.
