No. 3 Minnesota State Splits with Winona State in Regular Season Finale

MANKATO, Minn. --- Third-rated Minnesota State saw its 23 game winning streak come to an end on Saturday as they split with Winona State on the final day of the regular season.

The Mavericks dropped the Warriors 4-2 before losing the final game of the series 8-5. MSU finishes the regular season with a 40-5 overall record and a 30-4 record in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Warriors stand 21-28 and 19-17 in the NSIC.

In game one senior Nolan Johnson singled home senior Max Waletich to put MSU up 1-0 after one. The Warriors tied up the score at one in the second, but junior Kyle Toth hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Mavericks a 3-1 lead through three innings.

Senior Connor McCallum hit an RBI single in the fifth to push the score to 4-1 in favor of the Purple and Gold. The Warriors did score one run in the seventh, but junior Dakota Belter was able to finish the Warriors off for save number 10 of the year.

Senior Joey Reed moved to 2-2 after pitching six innings. He allowed four hits, two walks and one earned run while striking out one.

In game two, the Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a three-run home run by Travis Evanson. In the second inning, the Mavericks took advantage of back-to-back walks and a hit batter to load the bases. McCallum singled up the middle to pick up a pair of RBI to cut WSU's lead to 3-2.

The Warriors mounted a rally in the fifth inning, scoring four runs off of five hits to increase their lead to 7-2. They added one more in the sixth and in the bottom of the inning Toth doubled down the left field line and senior Kevin Kramer scored on a wild pitch as the Mavericks still trailed 8-4. Junior Taylor Branstad hit an RBI single in the seventh, but that was it as WSU's Mitch Voter came in and shut down the Mavericks.

Senior Nick Veale (3-1) pitched four innings and allowed three earned runs and four hits. Junior Peter Gaustad pitched .2 innings and sophomore Tyler Frohwirth also saw some action pitching 1.1 innings. Freshman Christian Howell pitched the final three innings and did not allow a run.
