Minnesota State Falls to Henderson State in Third Round of NCAA Central Region Tournament

ST. CLOUD, Minn. --- Minnesota State tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little too late as they fell to Henderson State University by a final score of 9-6 in the third round of the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament.

In the first inning of play, Henderson State took a 1-0 lead after a leadoff hit and the next batter getting hit by a pitch. Lance Fields then reached on an error which brought in the first run of the game.

Starting pitcher Joey Reed ran into some trouble in the third inning as the Reddies struck for three runs to take 4-0 lead. In the fifth inning, HSU bust open the game with four runs off of four hits.

In the bottom of the ninth with two outs, the Mavericks mounted a rally. Senior Kevin Kramer singled down the right field line to plate fellow senior Connor McCallum and sophomore Hunter Harnisch. Junior Kyle Toth hit an RBI single to plate Crosby to make the score 9-3. The Mavericks loaded the bases and Dylan Dresel drew a walk to bring in the fourth run. Harnisch came up again and hit a two-run single but that was it as MSU fell by a final of 9-6.

Reed pitched three innings and allowed six hits and four runs, three of those earned while striking out one batter. Freshman Christian Howell pitched two innings in relief and gave up four earned runs, five hits and one walk. Sophomore Tyler Frohwirth pitched the final four innings of the game and allowed just one earned run and three hits with three strikeouts.

With the loss, the Mavericks move to the loser's bracket and will play the winner of St. Cloud State/Southern Arkansas this afternoon at approximately 3 p.m at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud.
