ST. CLOUD, Minn. --- Minnesota State and St. Cloud State played a game for the ages on Saturday at Foe Faber Field in St. Cloud, but the Mavericks came up short by a final of 5-4 in extra innings.
The Huskies scored twice in the second inning, the first coming off an RBI single by Reese Gregory. Kyle Lieser followed that up with a sacrifice fly to plate another run. Then in the top of the fourth, they added another run when Eric Loxtercamp stole second and bumped into junior
Kyle Toth. Toth lost control of the ball after being bumped and Gregory came in to score.
The Mavericks cut into the lead in the bottom half of the fourth after Toth and sophomore
Eric Peterson hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Senior
Max Waletich hit a RBI single to right center to plate Toth and send Peterson to third. Senior
Connor McCallum hit a dribbler to the pitcher later in the inning and he was unable to play it as Peterson came in to score to bring the score to 3-2.
In the fifth inning, redshirt freshman
Josh Wenzel scored after a balk was called on the Huskies and the score was all knotted up at three. But in the next half inning, SCSU's Kyle Lieser hit a solo home run to left field to regain the lead at 4-3.
Peterson led off the bottom of the eight with a bunt single and advanced when Waletich grounded out. The Huskies brough in their ace, Reese Gregory, to face senior
Nolan Johnson. Johnson was able to hit a single to left field to score Peterson to tie up the score at four.
Neither team was able to score in the ninth inning and we had free baseball in St. Cloud. The Huskies scored one run in the top of the 10th with a sacrifice fly by Karl Sorensen. The Mavericks were sent down in order in the bottom half of the inning as they fell by a final of 5-4.
Sophomore
Mitchell Bauer pitched the first four innings and allowed three runs, two earned, five hits, two walks and struck out one batter. Junior
Dakota Belter pitched six innings in relief and allowed two runs, one of those being earned, four hits and struck out three batter. He ended up with the loss and finishes his season with a 3-2 record.
Toth and Peterson were the only two Mavericks with two hits in the game.
The Mavericks finished the season with an overall record of 43-9 and made their tenth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
