DULUTH, Minn. --- Some great pitching performances by both teams led to second-rated Minnesota State splitting its doubleheader against Minnesota Duluth on Friday at Wade Stadium in Duluth.
In the first game, MSU's offense was stifled by UMD's Bo Hellquist who threw a complete game no-hitter with six strikeouts as the Bulldog's won 5-1. The Mavericks only run came off a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning by senior
Kevin Kramer that scored junior
Chase Lonetti.
Sophomore
Mitchell Bauer took the loss after allowing five runs and striking out six in 5.1 innings. Junior
Dakota Belter pitched .2 innings and struck out two of the three batters he faced.
It didn't take long for MSU to get its first hit and run in game number two. Sophomore
Eric Peterson reached on an error to begin the game and later scored on a single by senior
Nolan Johnson to take a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks added to their lead in the sixth inning after a couple of two-out hits. Redshirt freshman
Luke Waldek picked up two RBI after hitting a double off the wall to straight center field to plate senior
Connor McCallum and junior
Taylor Branstad. Junior
Kyle Toth followed that up with a single to left to put MSU up 4-0 through six.
Johnson added a home run in the seventh as MSU took the second game by a final score of 5-0. Redshirt freshman
Aaron Rozek allowed three hits, walked one and struck out seven in eight innings to move to 3-0 on the year. Freshman
Dalton Roach finished off the Bulldogs with three strikeouts in the final inning of play.
Minnesota State stands 16-3 overall and are 6-2 in the NSIC while the Bulldogs move to 12-8 and are 6-4 in the NSIC.
The Mavericks will be back at it again tomorrow afternoon at Wade Stadium in Duluth for another doubleheader against the Bulldogs. First pitch for game one is slated for noon.
