Brad McClure and stellar goaltending from junior netminder
Stephon Williams, #2 rated Minnesota State skated past Ferris State by a 4-0 margin in semi-final action of the WCHA Final Five played in St. Paul, Minn., Friday evening.
McClure ripped one over the left shoulder of CJ Motte at 12:24 of the first as the Mavericks got out to a 1-0 first period lead at 12:24.
Minnesota State scored twice in the middle frame to take a 3-0 lead. McClure got his second on the night on a deflection of
Casey Nelson's shot from the point at 15:18. Freshman forward
C.J. Franklin tallied his eighth goal of the season and first power play goal of the year at 18:16 when he beat Motte with a snapshot high on the glove side. McClure and Williams drew assists on the goal.
Junior forward
Bryce Gervais sealed the win with an empty net tally at 17:57 of the final period. The goal is the 27
th of the year for Gervais and his 14
th marker in the last 15 games.
McClure, who had his first career multiple-goal game in the win, had a career-high three points.
Minnesota State, which converted on one-of-four chances on the power play, put 25 shots on goal.
Junior netminder
Stephon Williams, who made 25 stops, earned his fifth shutout of the season and now stands 24-5-3 on the year. He extended his school record for career shutouts to ten.
The Mavericks, 28-7-33 on the season, advance to the WCHA Final Five championship game and will look to win the Broadmoor Trophy for the second straight year when they face Michigan Tech Saturday night with a 6:07 p.m. face-off scheduled.
