LAKELAND, Fla. --- The fourth-rated Minnesota State baseball team finished play in Florida with two wins over Wayne State University by scores of 7-6 and 13-5, respectively, to move its season record to 9-1.
In game one the Mavericks used back-to-back doubles from redshirt freshman
Dylan Dresel and senior
Max Waletich to score the first run of the game. In the second inning, senior
Kevin Kramer singled home junior
Kyle Toth to give MSU a 2-0 lead. Kramer later scored on a wild pitch to tack on another run.
Wayne State University stormed back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead back. In the top of the sixth senior
Connor McCallum pinch ran and later scored on an error to tie up the score.
The Warriors retook the lead at 6-4 heading into the final inning of play. The Mavericks offense rallied in the top of the seventh off a couple Warrior errors and some timely hits. After Waletich was hit by a pitch, junior
Chase Lonetti pinch ran and moved up to second after senior
Nolan Johnson singled. Junior
Taylor Branstad followed that up with a double to plate Lonetti and advance Johnson to third. An error by WSU's second baseman allowed Johnson and Branstad to score to put MSU up 7-4.
Junior
Dakota Belter came in the final half inning and sent down the Warriors in order to pick up the save. Freshman
Brody Rodning received credit for the win despite allowing two runs in one inning of work.
In game number two, MSU's offense exploded for 15 runs including 10 runs in its final two innings at bat. The two teams were tied at three until MSU put up a four spot in the bottom of the fifth started by Johnson's double to right field. Branstad singled to pick up an RBI. He scored later on a bases loaded walk and a two-out single by sophomore
Eric Peterson scored two more runs.
The Warriors added two runs in the next inning but MSU's offense proved to be too potent scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Freshman
Christian Howell pitched two innings and allowed just one earned run to move to 3-0 on the year. Freshman
Dalton Roach started the game allowed just four hits and one earned run over three innings while junior
Peter Gaustad and Belter each came in and pitched one inning.
Johnson continues to stay hot at the plate and has hit safely in every game this season. Dresel increased his hitting streak to nine games after getting hits in both games today.
The Mavericks will be off until March 21 when they open up league play at home against the University of Mary.
