AUBURNDALE, Fla. --- Redshirt freshman
Dylan Dresel was the hero for fourth-rated Minnesota State on Wednesday as his single in the bottom of the ninth scored the winning to help the Mavericks defeated Saint Joseph's College by a final score of 4-3.
MSU strung together four two-out hits to take a 2-0 lead after one inning of play. Senior
Max Waletich singled to center and advanced to second on a passed ball. Senior
Nolan Johnson followed up with a double, his sixth of the season, to plate Waletich. After a single by junior
Taylor Branstad to advance Johnson to third, redshirt freshman
Josh Crosby singled to put MSU up 2-0.
The Panthers and Mavericks traded runs in the third inning and SJC tied up the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the ninth senior
Kevin Kramer singled to lead off the inning and sophomore
Eric Peterson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Kramer to second. Dresel then came up and hit a single to left center field to push across Kramer for the winning run.
Senior
Nick Veale completed five innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits and struck out four in his first start of the season. Freshman
Brody Rodning shut out the Panthers in the final three innings to pick up the win.
Johnson kept his eight-game hitting streak alive going 3-3 with 2 RBI and one run scored. Waletich went 4-4 with two doubles as well as two singles and two runs scored.
The Mavericks will play its final games at the RussMatt Invitational tomorrow morning with a doubleheader against Wayne State University. Game one is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. CST.
