Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota State women's basketball team beat Minot State on Saturday evening by the score of 75-61.
With the win, the Mavericks record improves to 16-6 overall and 13-4 in conference play.
In a first half where both teams combined for 23 turnovers, the Mavericks were able to build it's largest in the first half to five, 8-3, with 16:23 left in the half. After that the Beavers began to take control throughout the rest of the half, as MISU quickly took its first lead of the game at the 14:41 mark, 10-8.
The Beavers would eventually extend their lead to double-digits, 25-15, over the Mavericks at 6:52 mark in the first half. The closest MSU got to the lead was at the 4:02 mark in the half, as the Mavericks cut their deficit to five, 27-22. Minot State, however, would go into halftime leading, 35-29, over the Mavericks.
MSU managed to shoot just 28% from the field in the first half and slightly better from three, with 29% (5-17). Whereas, the Beavers shot an impressive 51% from the field and 75% (3-4) from three.
Going into halftime, sophomore guard
Britney Scherber led the Mavericks with seven points, while senior guards
Ashley Olson and
Aubrey Davis each posted six points of their own in the half.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Mavericks would quickly battle back into the Beavers lead, as MSU retook the lead, 40-39, at 15:26 mark in the second half. For the next seven minutes, the Mavericks and Beavers would trade baskets, until the 8:15 mark in the half, as MSU was able to build its biggest lead at that point to seven, 55-48, over MISU.
However, the Beavers wouldn't quite go away, as MISU managed to go on a little 7-2 run themselves to cut the MSU to only two, 57-55, with 6:17 left in the game.
After that point, the Mavericks managed to outscore the Beavers, 18-6, for the final six minutes of the game. Minnesota State went on to win the game, 75-61, over Minot State.
In the second half, the Mavericks improved on their shooting, as they shot 50% from the field and only turned the ball over five times, while the Beavers turned it over 11 times.
Sophomore guard
Sammie Delzotto posted 12 points and three boards in the second half, while senior forward
Lexie Ulfers added 10 points and three boards of own.
For the game, the Mavericks were able to convert on nine three-pointers and outrebounded the Beavers, 40-33. MSU was also able to outscore MISU in points off turnovers, 20-11.
Both Delzotto and Ulfers finished the game with 16 points, to help lead the Mavericks in the win. Delzotto also recorded nine rebounds and two assists, as Ulfers tallied seven boards and two blocks of her own. Olson ended the game with 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and hit four three-pointers, while Scherber posted nine points, two boards and two steals. Davis did a little bit of everything in the win, as she accumulated seven points, eight assists, four rebounds and four steals.
The Mavericks will return back to action on Tuesday, as they will play host to Concordia-St. Paul. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Taylor Center.
