Mavericks Unable to Solve Golden Bears at Home

Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota State women's basketball team fell to Concordia-St. Paul on Tuesday evening by the score of 86-73. 

With the loss, the Mavericks record drops to 16-7 overall and 13-5 in conference play.

To start the game, the Maverick would jump out quickly as they built a 11-4 advantage over the Golden Bears within the first three minutes of the game. CU would quickly cut back into MSU's lead, as they were able to tie the game up at 16-16 with 12:53 left in the first half. 

Again, the Mavericks would go on another 12-5 run for the next seven minutes, to make the score 28-21 over the Golden Bears, at the 5:55 mark in the first half. However, CU wouldn't let the Mavericks build on their lead anymore, as the Golden Bears had another answer for it. 

CU would wind up going on a 12-2 run themselves to give the Golden Bears their first lead of the game at, 33-30, with 2:26 left in the half. To finish out the rest of the first half, MSU and CU would trade baskets between the two, to go into halftime with the Golden Bears leading over the Mavericks, 38-37.

In the first half, the Mavericks shot 34% from the field and were able to convert on five three-pointers, while the Golden Bears shot a blistering 50% from the field. MSU was also outscored in the paint by CU, 20-6.

It was a balanced attack for the Mavericks going into halftime as five players posted at least five points at the break. Senior forward Lexie Ulfers led the way with nine points, while senior guards Aubrey Davis and Ashley Olson were right behind with each one having eight points of their own. Senior forward Jamie Bresnahan and sophomore guard Britney Scherber each recorded five points themselves at the break.

Coming out of the break, the Golden Bears would seize control, as CU would build from its halftime lead to eight, 52-44, at the 14:00 mark of the half. The Golden Bears would keep it at that margin over for the next seven minutes before they were able extend it double-digits, 66-55, at the 7:10 mark in the half.

The Golden Bears largest lead of the game of 15 came at the 5:45 mark in the second half. The closest the Mavericks would get to the Golden Bears lead would be at the 5:02 mark, as they were able to cut the lead to eight, after a rare four-point play from Olson. 

However, the Golden Bears would quickly extend their lead back to double-digits, as CU would go on for the 86-73 win over MSU.

In the second half the Mavericks shot 36% from the field and were able to hit four more three-pointers, while the Golden Bears left off where they did in the first half. CU managed to shoot  53.6% in the second half and went 15-19 from the charity stripe.

Overall, the Maverick shot 35% from the field, as the Golden Bears shot 51.8% for the game. Also, the Mavericks were outscored in the paint by the Golden Bears, 34-12.

Davis finished with 16 points, six boards and five rebounds, while Olson ended the game with 13 points and 3-6 from three. Bresnahan posted 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the game, as Scherber recorded 10 points, two rebounds and two steals in the loss.

The Mavericks will return back to action on Friday, as they will play host to Winona State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Taylor Center.
