Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota State women's basketball team beat the University of Mary on Friday evening by the score of 85-64. In the game, the Mavericks bench outscored the Marauders bench, 37-9.
With the win, the Mavericks record improves to 15-6 overall and 12-4 in conference play.
In the first half, both teams managed to combine for 22 turnovers, as MSU turned it over nine times while U-Mary coughed it up 13 times themselves. The Mavericks led for the majority of the first half over the Marauders, as MSU was able to build it's largest lead of the half at 12 with 3:15 left to play. The Mavericks went into halftime leading 41-33 over the Marauders.
Minnesota State shot 48% from the field in the first half, including six made threes in the half. MSU was also able to outscore U-Mary off the bench, 15-0, in the first half.
At the break, senior guard
Aubrey Davis led the Mavericks after posting 13 points, five rebounds and three assists, while junior center
McKenzie Hoelmenn came off the bench and added eight points and three boards of her own.
To begin the second half, the Marauders started the half on little run, as they were able to cut the Maverick lead to two, 49-47, with 15:18 left in the game. U-Mary would hold tight with MSU for the next couple minutes before the Mavericks would retake their double-digit lead for good, 62-51, with 9:59 left in the game.
After that point, the Mavericks would manage to outscore the Marauders, 23-13, for the last 10 minutes of the game, to go on to a 85-64 victory over U-Mary.
For the game, Minnesota State shot 44% from the field, including 10 made three-pointers. The Mavericks forced 23 U-Mary turnovers, which equated to 23 points off turnovers for MSU. The purple and gold also managed to out-rebound U-Mary, 45-32 in the game.
Davis finished with a game-high 17 points, to go along with five rebounds and four assists while shooting 3-4 from behind the arc. Senior guard
Ashley Olson scored all 14 of her points in the second half, as she went 3-5 from the behind the arc. Hoelmenn ended the night just shy of a double-double, with a career-high 13 points to go along with her nine rebounds.
The Mavericks will continue their stay at home Saturday, as they will play host to Minot State. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Taylor Center
