Mankato, Minn. - The Minnesota State volleyball team picked up its second win of the weekend, as the Mavericks swept St. Cloud State on Saturday afternoon at Taylor Center. MSU won by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-20.
Freshman outside hitter
Nevena Vukomanovich [Maplewood, Minn.] posted a new career-high of 12 kills in the win and also collected her second career double-double as she added 12 digs. Junior
Lexi Platz [Lafayette, Minn.] finished right behind, as she posted her second straight double figure match with 11 kills. Vukomanovich recorded a sizzling .355 attack percentage, while Platz collected an even higher attack percentage with .391.
Early in set one, SCSU held a 5-1 lead over MSU, before the Mavericks cut into the Huskies lead and eventually tied the set up at 10-10. Soon MSU took its first lead in the set and built a 16-12 advantage over SCSU, which marked as its largest lead over the Huskies in the set. SCSU did cut the MSU lead down to one, 19-18, late in the set but the Mavericks held on to 25-23 set one win.
Junior
Krista Hassing [Blue Earth, Minn.] paced the Mavericks offense in set one with five kills, while Vukomanovich tallied three kills in the set.
Set two it was a close battle between both team as the set was all tied at 12-12 midway through. From that point on, the Mavericks finished the set on a 13-5 run to take set two with a 25-17 win over the Huskies.
In the second frame, MSU accumulated an impressive .317 attack percentage, while SCSU recorded just a -.054 attack percentage. Platz and Vukomanovich dominated set two as they ended the set with six and five kills, respectively.
In the third and final set of the match, it was again tied midway through at 13-13 between both teams. MSU would again go on a nice little 6-1 run on SCSU to take a 19-14 lead. After a Huskies timeout, the Mavericks continued their control late in the set and took set three, 25-20 over the Huskies.
Platz and Vukomanovich each finished set three with four kills apiece, while sophomore
Vikolia Meade [Solon, Iowa] pitched in with three solo blocks in the final frame.
Overall, the Mavericks hit just shy of a .300 attack percentage, with a .292 in the win, while the Huskies managed to post just a .117 attack percentage. MSU was also able to out-block SCSU, as the Purple and Gold tallied eight total team blocks, compared to the Huskies two total team blocks.
Hassing finished the match one shy of double figures in kills with nine and also added four block assists and a career-high eight digs. Meade and freshman
Autumn Risch [Howards Grove, Wis.] each ended the match with four kills apiece, while Risch posted a match-high 34 assists, along with five digs.
Junior
Haley Fogarty [Belle Plaine, Minn.] led the Mavericks with 13 digs in the match, while junior
Rissi McNallan [Andover, Minn.] added a match-high three service aces in the win.
With the win, the Mavericks push their overall record to 14-8 overall and 8-6 in NSIC play.
MSU will hit the road next week, as it will travel to Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State. The Mavericks will play UMC on Friday at 7:00 p.m., before they take on BSU next Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
