MOORHEAD, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team saw its three-match winning streak come to an end Friday evening as the MSU Moorhead Dragons swept the Mavericks by the scores of 26-24, 25-22 and 25-22.
With the loss the Mavericks fall to 12-6 on the season, including a 6-4 NSIC record. With the win, MSU Moorhead improves to 12-6 on the season, including a 5-5 league record.
The first set saw the Mavericks jump out to a quick 5-1 lead, only to see the Dragons go on a 7-0 run to take an 8-5 lead. The Dragons would maintain a lead late into the set before the Mavericks knotted up the score at 24-24, before an attack error and a setting error by the Mavericks gave the Dragons the 26-24 victory in the first set.
Senior
Krista Hassing led the Maverick offense in the first set with four kills, while hitting .286. Freshman
Autumn Risch passes out 10 assists as well.
The first part of the second set proved to be a back and forth contest as both teams found themselves tied at 14, but the Dragons would then go on an 8-2 run to take a 22-16 lead. The Mavericks would pull within two points of the Dragons at 24-22, which included a pair of kills from senior
Rachel Ott and junior
Courtney Anderson, but a kill by MSU Moorhead's Abby Wolpern ended the set at 25-22 in favor of the Dragons.
Junior
Lexi Platz and Anderson each tallied a team-leading three kills in the second set, with Risch passing out 12 assists.
The final set saw neither team lead by more than two points early on as the Dragons held a 19-17 lead. The Mavericks would then go on a 4-2 run to knot up the score at 21, but the Dragons would force four Maverick attack errors to claim the set 25-22 and the match.
Platz and Anderson led the Maverick offense against the Dragons with eight kills in the match, while Risch tallied a match-high 31 assists. Junior
Haley Fogarty notched a team-leading 20 digs, while Anderson, Hassing and sophomore
Vikolia Meade each posted four block assists.
Carly Masloski posted a match-high 14 kills for the Dragons, while Casie Baer passed out 28 assists.
The Mavericks continue their season on the road Saturday as they take on #6 Northern State. The opening serve is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
