Mankato, Minn.- The Minnesota State volleyball team picked up another sweep victory in consecutive days this weekend, as it swept the University of Mary on Saturday afternoon at Taylor Center. The Mavericks defeated the Marauders by scores of 25-16, 15-16 and 25-22.
With the win the Mavericks improve their record to 12-5 overall and 6-3 in NSIC play.
MSU dominated set one as the Mavericks at one point held a double-digit advantage over U-Mary, 20-10. The Mavericks took the first set, 25-16, as junior
Lexi Platz [Lafayette, Minn.] led the way with four kills in the set. Juniors
Krista Hassing [Blue Earth, Minn.] and
Courtney Anderson [Tripoli, Iowa] each recorded three kills of their own in the set as well.
It was more of the same in set two as the Mavericks were leading 14-7 midway through over the Marauders. MSU finished off the set with another 25-16 victory over U-Mary. In the set the Mavericks collected a sizzling .516 attack percentage while the Marauders posted just a .161 attack percentage. Hassing led the offensive attack in the set with six kills and a .556 attack percentage. Sophomore
Vikolia Meade [Solon, Iowa] posted four kills and a .800 attack percentage while junior
Sydney Geisness tallied three kills of her own.
In the third and final set it was more of a back and forth affair as both team were tied at 10-10. It was more of the same late into the set with it being still tied at 19-19, as neither team had more then a two-point lead within that span. After that point the Mavericks began to regain control as they went on a small 3-1 run to give them a 22-20 lead late in the set. The Marauders quickly called a timeout after the Mavericks run, but it wasn't enough as MSU took the third set 25-22 over U-Mary. Hassing added another four kills in the set while Meade fell right behind with three kills of own.
Overall the Mavericks finished with an impressive .363 attack percentage in the match, while the Marauders accumulated a .099 attack percentage. MSU also notched four service aces and five total blocks in the win.
Hassing finished the match with a match-high 13 kills to go along with a .400 attack percentage and two total blocks. Meade and Platz each tallied seven kills in the match, while Meade clipped a .357 attack percentage and Platz tagged a .333 attack percentage.
Anderson ended the match with six kills and a .429 attack percentage, while Geisness recorded five kills and four digs in the win.
Senior
Ellie Van De Steeg [Hutchinson, Minn.] finished with a match-high 29 assists, while freshman
Autumn Risch [Howards Grove, Wis.] in her first collegiate playing time ended the match with eight assists of her own.
Junior
Haley Fogarty [Belle Plaine, Minn.] posted a match-high 15 digs, as
Maddie Keute [Grand Rapids, Minn.] posted nine kills to her stat line.
The Mavericks will return to action on Friday and next Saturday, as they will travel to MSU Moorhead and Northern State. MSU will take on MSU Moorhead on Friday at 7:00 p.m., before the Mavericks square off with Northern State next Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
