MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team held the lead after one period of play but No. 3 Wisconsin proved to be too much as they beat the Mavericks, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at All Seasons Arena.
Minnesota State's record falls to 2-23-1 overall and 0-19-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play while Wisconsin improves to 21-4-3 and 16-4-2 in the WCHA.
The Mavericks scored the games first goal at the 13:08 mark of the opening period. Freshman
Lindsey Coleman tallied her first career goal in a Maverick uniform scoring off her own rebound in front as freshman
Elin Johansson recorded her fifth assist on the year. MSU took a 1-0 lead into intermission as the Badgers outshot the Mavericks 18-5 in the period.
The Badgers struck back at 10:16 of the second period to even up the score at one piece. Later in the period Wisconsin took the lead as Annie Pankowski scored a short handed goal which proved to be the game winner.
In the third and final period Wisconsin's Blayre Turnbull gave the Badgers a two goal lead at the 6:13 mark. Later in the period, Baylee Wellhausen and Karley Sylvester put the game out of reach as they pushed the score to a final of 5-1.
Sophomore
Brianna Quade got the start for the Mavericks in goal and tallied 50 saves.
The Badgers outshot the Mavericks 55-12 on the night and went 0-4 on the power play compared to MSU who went 0-3 with the extra skater advantage.
Minnesota State will return to action Monday night as they play host to St. Cloud State University. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
