MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team lost to No. 2 Minnesota Saturday afternoon in Mankato in All Seasons by a score of 7-1.
Minnesota State's record falls to 2-19-1 overall and 0-15-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play while Minnesota improves to 21-1-3 and 14-1-3 in the WCHA.
Minnesota took the lead at 1:26 of the opening period as Hannah Brandt was able to score for the Gophers. Rachel Bona added another goal at 11:10 of the period to increase the lead to 2-0 while Kelly Pannek added a power play goal at 15:08 to give Minnesota a 3-0 at the end of one perod of play.
In the middle frame the Gophers added three more goals to increase their lead to 6-0. Maryanne Menefee, Cara Piazza, and Dani Cameranesi each scored in the period.
The Mavericks lone goal came off the stick of freshman
Hannah Davidson at 6:05 of the final period with freshman
Nicole Schammel getting credited with the assist. The Gophers added a goal with 1:28 remaining in the game to bring the score to 7-1.
Sophomore
Brianna Quade made 41 saves on the evening and falls to 1-5-0 on the season. The Mavericks were outshot by the Gophers 48-12 and went 0-4 on the power play while Minnesota was 2-7 with the extra skater.
Minnesota State will continue WCHA play next weekend as they host the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth on Friday at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday afternoon at 3:07 p.m.
