Crookston, Minn. – The Minnesota State women's basketball team lost to Minnesota Crookston on Saturday evening by the score of 75-70 in overtime.
With the loss, the Mavericks record falls to 11-5 overall and 8-3 in conference play.
The Mavericks were trailing early to the Golden Eagles in the first half, as MSU was down 8-2 at the 17:17 mark. The Mavericks would quickly take gain control, as MSU went on a 11-0 run to put the Mavericks ahead of the Golden Eagles 13-8, with 13:05 left to play in the first half.
Throughout the rest of the first half, the Mavericks would hold on to a slim advantage over the Golden Eagles, as MSU went into halftime leading over UMC 34-29.
The Mavericks shot 37.1% (13-35) from the field compared to the Golden Eagles 28.1% (9-32).
At the break, senior guard
Aubrey Davis led the Mavericks with a team-high 14 points, to go along with her four rebounds and three assists. Senior guard
Ashley Olson hit a trio of three-pointers as she ended the first half with nine points and four rebounds. Senior forward
Lexie Ulfers also added five points, six rebounds and two blocks in the first half.
Coming out of the break, MSU would extend it's halftime lead back into double digits, 50-35, with 14:04 left to play in the second half. However that would be the biggest lead the Mavericks had the rest of the game, as the Golden Eagles would quickly erase MSU's 15 point lead.
UMC went on 14-1, to cut MSU's lead to two, 51-49, with 8:12 left to play in the second half. Throughout the rest of the half, MSU and UMC would trade baskets between each other, as the Golden Eagles would eventually tie the game up at the end of regulation, 62-62, to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, the game was still tied at 65-65 with 4:03 left to play, before UMC went on a little 6-1 run, to make the score 71-66 with 2:29 left to play. In the end, the Golden Eagles would hold on to their lead and close out the game over the Mavericks, 75-70.
In the second half and overtime, the Mavericks shot a combined 31% field goal percentage compared to the Golden Eagles 46%.
Davis led the Mavericks as she recorded her first career double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with her six assists and three steals. Olson also recorded her first career double-double in the losing effort, as the Blue Earth, Minn. native posted 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard
Sammie Delzotto finished with 14 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Ulfers tallied nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocks of her own.
The next time the Mavericks play, will be Friday at home against Southwest Minnesota State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Taylor Center.
