Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota State women's basketball team beat Southwest Minnesota State on Friday night by the score of 76-62.
With the win, the Mavericks record improves to 12-5 overall and 9-3 in conference play.
At the first media timeout of the first half, the Mavericks were up 13-8 over the Mustangs, at the 14:43 mark. After that point, MSU went on a 24 -7 run the next 10 minutes, to make the score 37-15, with 4:37 left to play in the first half. Going into halftime, the Mavericks led 46-24 over the Mustangs.
During the first half, the Mavericks shot an impressive 58% from the floor, compared to the Mustangs 38% field goal percentage. MSU was also able to convert five three-pointers and was perfect from the charity stripe (7-7) in the first half. The Mavericks just turned the ball over five times and forced 12 Mustang turnovers, which converted to 17 points off turnovers for MSU.
Leading the way for the Mavericks at halftime was senior forward
Lexie Ulfers, as the Waseca, Minn native posted a team-high 13 points to go along with her two rebounds. Senior guard
Aubrey Davis recorded 10 points and three assists, while senior guard
Ashley Olson posted eight points of her own in the first half.
To start the second half, the Mavericks set the tone early, as MSU jumped out on a 12-2 run to make the score 58-28 with 13:55 left to play in the game. Throughout the rest of the game, the Mavericks would lead comfortably throughout, as MSU would go onto a 76-62 victory over SMSU.
Overall, the Mavericks would force 21 Mustang turnovers and MSU would outscore SMSU, 24-9, off turnovers. The Mavericks shot 42% from the field and hit eight three-pointers in the win.
Davis led the way with a game-high 20 points, including 4-7 from three, to go along with her four rebounds, three assists and two steals for the game. Ulfers finished right behind as she posted 18 points and five boards of her own, while Olson pitched in with 13 points and two steals
The Mavericks will continue their weekend homestand Saturday, as they will host Sioux Falls at Taylor Center. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
