Bemidji, Minn. – The Minnesota State women's basketball team beat Bemidji State on Friday evening by the score of 80-63.
With the win, the Mavericks record improves to 11-4 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
MSU built an early 16-4 advantage over BSU within the first nine minutes of the first half. The Beavers would close the gap within single digits, 28-20 before MSU extended its lead back to double-digits at the 2:34 mark, 30-20, off a two-point jumper from senior guard
Aubrey Davis. Going into halftime, the Mavericks would extend their lead to 15, 35-20, as MSU forced 11 BSU turnovers in the first half.
At the break, Davis led all scorers with 16 points, as the Bloomington, Minn. native shot 6-8 from the floor, including 2-4 from three. Sophomore guard
Sammie Delzotto and posted six point and three rebounds of her own, while senior forward
Lexie Ulfers recorded four points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
To start the second half, the Beavers would chip into the Mavericks lead within the first three minutes of the half, as BSU narrowed MSU's lead to single digits, 38-29. However, that would be the closest the Beavers got to the lead throughout the rest of the game.
The Mavericks would quickly push their lead back into double-digits and would have as big of lead of 23 at the 6:50 mark in the second half. MSU shot 50% (7-14) from behind the arc and outscored the BSU bench 20-11 in the second half, as the Mavericks went on for the 80-63 victory over the Beavers.
Junior forward
Anna Leloux led the Mavericks in the second half as she tallied eight points, while guards
Britney Scherber and
Ashley Olson each posted six points of their own.
The Mavericks hit 10 three-pointers, compared to the Beavers four from beyond the arc. MSU also outscored BSU in the paint, 28-16, and points off turnovers, 18-8.
Seven Mavericks ended the night with at least seven points in the game. Davis led all players with a game-high 19 points, including 3-5 from three. Delzotto and Leloux each finished with 10 points, and added four and five rebounds, respectively. Scherber ended with nine points, three assists and two rebounds, while Ulfers did a little bit of everything, as she recorded eight points, nine boards, three assists and three blocks. Olson pitched in with eight points, two rebounds and two steals, while junior center
McKenzie Hoelmenn accumulated seven points, three rebounds and one block.
The Mavericks will continue their roadtrip Saturday, as they will take on Minnesota Crookston. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
