Mavericks Push Winning-Streak to 14 with a Pair of Wins over SMSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. PETER, Minn. --- The Minnesota State softball team kept things rolling as it downed Southwest Minnesota State by scores of 9-3 and 2-0, pushing its winning-streak to 14 games Wednesday afternoon.

With the wins, MSU improves to 24-6 overall and 8-0 in NSIC action while the Mustangs fall to 6-18 overall and 3-5 on the circuit. Head Coach Lori Meyer now sits nine wins away from her 1,000 career win.

MSU began the day with a 9-3 win in the doubleheader's opening game.

The Mustangs were able to score the game's first run as Elissa Reinsma crossed the dish. SMSU had the bases loaded on multiple occasions, but freshman pitcher Coley Ries was able to keep the game at 1-0 in favor of the Mustangs following the first inning.

The Mavericks tied the game at 1-1 following the fourth inning before exploding for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Ashley Thell, sophomores Karli Deslauries, Abby Whritenour and Tatum Klein all crossed the dish, in addition to seniors Samantha Holien, Kelly Wood and Anna Cole giving MSU an 8-1 lead heading into the sixth inning. The Maverick offense was highlighted in the fifth inning by a DesLauries triple which plated three runs.

The Mustangs answered with two runs in the top of the sixth inning before Cole recorded her third home run of the season pushing the Maverick lead to 9-3 heading into the final inning of play.

Cole led the Maverick offense with three runs on three hits with three RBI in four at bats. DesLauries and Holien each posted two hit games as well.
Ries went all seven inning in the circle, allowing three earned runs on six hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. With the win, the Eagle Lake, Minn., native improved to 11-2 on the season.

In game two of the twin bill, the Mavericks and Mustangs saw a 0-0 tie through the first four innings before sophomore Abby Whritenour reached base after being hit by a pitch, followed by another DesLauries triple giving MSU its first lead of the game, 1-0 heading into the fifth inning.

The Mavericks posted an addition run as sophomore Emily Bransky scored as a pinch runner with the RBI credited to freshman Samantha Buhmann, giving the Mavericks a 2-0 lead following the fifth inning.

SMSU was unable to find its way on the scoreboard as junior Brittany Lauterbach recorded her fifth shutout of the season to improve to 11-4 overall. She went all seven inning, allowing six hits with two walks.

Holien recorded two hits in the second contest of the day, as Bransky and Whritenour each posted runs.

The Mavericks return to action Saturday as they travel to Moorhead, Minn to do battle with MSU Moorhead, opening pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
