Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. --- The Minnesota State softball team extended its winning streak to four games Sunday as it downed LIU Post (3-0) and Ferris State (2-0). With the wins, MSU improved to 6-4 on the season.
The Mavericks began the day with an eight innings, 3-0 win over the LIU Post Pioneers and completed the day not surrendering a run as they downed the Ferris State Bulldogs 2-0.
Freshman
Coley Ries (3-1) won her third game of the season as she went the distance as she threw an eight inning shutout. She struck out 10 batters, while allowing just three hits and a walk. Quincy Lewis (0-1) took the loss as she gave up one unearned run through seven innings.
The first seven innings saw Ries and Megan Calcido in a pitchers dual as the Mavericks stranded five runners on base compared to the Pioneers three as neither team was able to plate a run.
In the top of the eight freshman
Ashley Thell was place on second to begin the inning, with Lewis coming on in relief of Calcido. Sophomore
Laura Milligan sacrificed Thell over to third, before senior
Samantha Holien drove in Thell with an RBI-single to put MSU up 1-0.
The Mavericks managed to string together three more hits, including an RBI-single from senior
Anna Cole and an RBI-double from senior
Kelly Wood, to put the Mavericks up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.
The Pioneers place a runner on second to start the bottom of the eight, but Ries would only allow the runner to reach third as she notched two fly ball outs and a strikeout to lock down the shutout for MSU.
The Mavericks and Bulldogs were tied at 0-0 before the MSU offense was able to find its rhythm behind the dish scoring two runs in the bottom of fifth inning as freshman
Dana Mogren was walked and eventually scored off of an RBI single by Holien. Holien made her way across homeplate with the RBI credited to sophomore
Karli DesLauries, securing the 2-0 victory for the Mavericks
Junior
Brittany Lauterbach went all seven innings in the circle for MSU, allowing three hits but did not surrender a run as she improved to 2-3 on the season, lifting the Mavericks to a 6-4 overall record.
