Mavericks Drop Final Two Contests At Rebel Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. --- The Minnesota State softball team fell to Adelphi (8-7) and Indianapolis (1-0) in eight innings in its final two contest of the Rebel Spring Games. With the pair of losses, the Mavericks fall to 10-6 on the year.

Senior Samantha Holien started the day against Adelphi with a leadoff home run, her third dinger of the season. Two batters later, senior Lindsay Erickson recorded her third home run of the year. The remaining two seniors on the squad also made their way across home plate in the opening inning as Kelly Wood and Anna Cole were batted in by sophomore Tatum Klein, bringing the score to 4-0 after the first half of an inning.

Adelphi answered with two first inning runs, making it a 4-2 game after one complete inning.

Wood scored her second run of the day in the third inning with sophomore Laura Milligan recording the sacrafice fly. The Panthers also notched a run in the third inning, bringing the score to 5-3 after three innings.

The Panthers expolded four a five run fourth inning opening an 8-3 lead with three innings remaining.

MSU responded with two runs in the top of the sixth inning as Holien crossed the dish on an RBI-single from Erickson, who also scored her second run of the contest off of an RBI double from Cole. The Mavericks were unable to complete the comeback, falling by a final score of 8-7.

Junior Brittany Lauterbach got the start and pitched 3.2 innings giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits with one walk and one strikeout. Freshman Samantha Buhmann saw two innings of relief work, giving up three hits, while freshman Coley Ries pitch one-third of an inning, sitting down one batter.

Erickson led the offensive effort for the Mavericks in their first game, going two-of-three from the dish including two RBI and a dinger.

In their second contest of the day, the Mavericks found themselves in a pitchers duel through the first seven innings as neither team was able to cross homeplate, forcing the international tiebreaker to go into effect in the eighth inning, placing a leadoff runner on second base.

Greyhound second baseman Alexa Alfaro scored the game's lone run in the top of the eighth inning with the RBI going to Taylor Weck.

Sophomore Laura Milligan was placed on second base in the bottom of the eighth inning, with the Mavericks at the top of their order. Holien recorded a sacrafice bunt, moving Milligan to third, but MSU was unable to capitalize on the runner in scoring position, falling by a final score of 1-0.

Ries went all eight innings for the Mavericks allowing one unearned run on 10 hits, while fanning seven batters.

Freshman Molly Sager recorded MSU's only hit of the contest with a double in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Mavericks will return to action Friday, March 21 as they travel to St. Joseph, Mo., to compete in the Missouri Western Tournament, MSU kicks things off against Northwest Missouri State.
