Box Score 2 BENTONVILLE, Ark. --- The Minnesota State softball split the second day of competition at the UAM 8-State Classic Saturday as it downed East Central 4-3 before falling to Arkansas Tech 7-6 bringing its record to 2-2 overall.
The Mavericks wasted no time jumping out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against East Central as senior
Samantha Holien singled at the leadoff position. Holien reached second base on a
Tatum Klein sacrifice bunt and was batted in by fellow senior
Lindsay Erickson, who recorded a double.
Anna Cole stepped to the plate recording a two-run home run giving the Mavericks a 3-0 after the first inning.
The Tigers recorded two runs in the top of the third inning, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of the Mavericks. Erickson stepped to the plate and blasted her first home run of the 2014 campaign, pushing the Maverick lead to 4-2 after three complete innings.
ECU's comeback fell short as they posted one run in the top of the seventh but were unable to score the go-ahead run, giving the Mavericks the 4-3 victory.
Erickson and Cole led the MSU offensive charge, each recording two RBI, with Erickson posting two runs on two hits in three at bats. Sophomore
Brittany Lauterbach was credited with the win, she gave up two runs on six hits in five innings of work.
The Mavericks started the scoring against Arkansas Tech in the third inning as sophomore
Laura Milligan reached on an error by the pitcher and scored off of a home run by Holien. Erickson and Cole each added runs in the top of the third inning, with Erickson posting the solo shot, her second of the season. The Golden Suns answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, bringing the score to 4-1 in favor of MSU after three innings.
Arkansas Tech chipped away at the Maverick lead in the bottom of the fifth as it posted two runs, cutting MSU's lead to 4-3 after five complete innings.
MSU scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning as Klein crossed home plate off of the bat of Cole, and
Dana Mogren who was pinch running for Erickson crossed the dish on a passed ball.
The Golden Suns claimed the game in walk-off fashion as Courtney Colunga blasted a three-run shot giving Arkansas Tech the 7-6 victory.
The Mavericks were led in the second game of the day by Holien and Erickson who each recorded one run on one hit in four at bats, Holien also recorded 2 RBI. Lauterbach was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs in two innings of work.
MSU faces Fort Hayes State and Missouri Western in the final day of the UAM 8-State Classic on Sunday, with game times slated for 9:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
