Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota State women's basketball team upset #2 Wayne State by the score 72-65 on Saturday night at Taylor Center.
With the win, the Mavericks improve their record to 5-2 and 2-0 in conference play.
#2 Wayne State jumped out to an early 9-0 advantage over Minnesota State within the first four minutes of the game. However the Mavericks would fight back to tie the game at 12-12 at the 12:31 mark of the first half. The Mavericks would take the lead for good in the first half at 5:55 mark in the half, with score being 21-20. From that point on, MSU went into halftime on a 16-5 run, to make the score 37-26.
At the break, sophomore guard
Sammie Delzotto led the Mavericks with team-highs including seven points and eight rebounds, to go along with her three assists at the half. Both senior guards
Aubrey Davis and
Ashley Olson pitched in with six points, while sophomore guard
Britney Scherber added five points of her own.
To start the second half, the Wildcats jumped right out of the gates to battle their way back into the game. At the 12:36 mark WSC tied it all up with MSU at 50-50, marking the second tie of the game. The rest of the game stayed very close as both teams traded baskets for the majority of it, as both teams managed to build leads of six at one point. At the 4:58 mark, the game was tied at 63-63, before MSU would end the game on a 9-2 run to leave the game with a 72-65 Maverick victory.
In the second half senior forward
Lexie Ulfers accumulated 16 points and eight rebounds, while Delzotto added another 12 points and four rebounds to her stat sheet.
Overall, for the game, the Mavericks managed to shoot 53% (8-15) from beyond the arc and were able to outscore the Wildcats in the paint and in second chance points.
Individually, two Mavericks posted double-doubles in the upset victory. Delzotto posted her first career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with her four assists and two steals on the night. Ulfers also posted her second consecutive career double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while junior center
McKenzie Hoelmenn also posted 10 points and a career-high seven rebounds.
The Mavericks will travel to Upper Iowa for their next game. That game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday.
