Fayette, Iowa – The Minnesota State women's basketball team defeated Upper Iowa on Friday evening in overtime by the score of 80-75.
With the win, the Mavericks improve their record to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
After a back and forth start to the game, it was all tied up at 25-25 with 7:14 left in the first half between the Mavericks and Peacocks. However, the Mavericks would take control, as they went on a 11-2 run to make the score 36-27 with 3:37 left in the first half. Going into halftime, the Mavericks were leading over the Peacocks 40-34.
At the break, seniors
Lexie Ulfers and
Aubrey Davis led the way for the Mavericks as they posted 10 and eight points, respectively, going into halftime. Ulfers also a team-high six rebounds, while freshman guard
Madison Lee added five points of her own going into the break.
To start the second half, the Peacocks would eventually dwindle down the Mavericks lead, as UIU would take its first lead of the second half at the 16:13 mark, with the score being 45-44. After that, the Peacocks would extend their lead over the Mavericks to as big as nine points at one point, until the Mavericks finally took back their lead with 6:25 left to play in the game, with the score being 55-54. Throughout the rest of the half, the Mavericks and Peacocks would trade baskets with one another, as two lead changes and three ties would occur during the last five minutes of regulation, which resulted the game going into overtime at 63-63.
In the second half sophomore guard
Sammie Delzotto led the Mavericks as she posted nine points and four rebounds, while Ulfers added another six points and four rebounds to her stat sheet.
In overtime, the Mavericks took the lead first and never looked back as MSU were able to extend their lead to as much as seven at one point, and ended up winning the game over the Peacocks at, 80-75.
Overall, in a game that saw seven lead changes and seven ties, the key for the Mavericks in the game was points in the paint and bench scoring. MSU scored 42 points in the paint as UIU recorded 24 points down low, while the Purple and Gold bench also outscored the Peacock bench by twelve.
Individually, Ulfers led the way for the Mavericks as the Waseca, Minn. posted her third consecutive double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with her two blocks on the night. Delzotto also managed to post a career-high in the game with 20 points, along with six rebounds and two assists. One other Maverick finished with double-digit points, as it was senior guard Aubrey Davis, as she finished with 13 points, four rebounds and two steals in the game.
The Mavericks will round out their weekend road trip, as they will take on Winona State on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
