Winona, Minn. – The Minnesota State women's basketball team suffered its first conference loss of the season against Winona State on Saturday afternoon by the score of 73-62.
With the loss, the Mavericks record falls 6-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Within the first four minutes of the game, the Mavericks were already down seven to the Warriors, before MSU would tie the game up at 13-13 with 13:10 left in the first half. Throughout the rest of the half, MSU would stay in control as they led the whole way going into halftime. The Mavericks at one point had as big of lead as six, while MSU went into halftime leading by one, 33-32.
At the break, senior forward
Lexie Ulfers led MSU with 14 points and three rebounds, while sophomore guard
Sammie Delzotto recorded six points and five rebounds of her own.
Coming out of the break, the Warriors would come out firing on all cylinders as WSU took their first lead of the second half at the 15:33 mark, with the score being 38-37. MSU was never able to retake its lead over WSU in the second half as the Warriors had as big of as 15 at point over the Mavericks. In the end, the Warriors ended winning the game over the Mavericks at 73-62, as MSU was held to a 38% field goal percentage and committed 10 turnovers in the second half.
Ulfers led the way again in the second half, as she posted another eight points and seven rebounds to her stat sheet.
Overall, in a game that saw five lead changes and seven ties, MSU was able to outscore the WSU in the paint by 12 and also scored eight more fast break points than the Warriors. However, the difference in the game came from beyond the arc, as the WSU hit five more three-pointers than MSU.
Individually, Ulfers posted her fourth consecutive double-double, posting 22 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with two assists and two blocks on the night. Delzotto finished the game with 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals, while senior forward
Jamie Bresnahan tallied 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. It was also a milestone night for senior guard
Aubrey Davis, as she posted her 1,000 career point. In doing so, the Bloomington, Minn. native became the 21st Maverick in program history to hit the milestone.
The next time the Mavericks play, will be next Saturday, Dec. 20, as they will take on Concordia-St. Paul on the road. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
