MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State gave up two first period goals and were unable to recover as they lost to Ohio State 3-1 in Mankato on Friday night.
With the loss the Mavericks drop to 0-8-1 overall and 0-6-1 in WCHA play while the Buckeyes move to 6-3-0 and 4-3-0 in league play.
Ohio State got on the board early scoring 3:16 into the first period as Breanne Grant tallied her first goal of the season. Just two minutes later Haley Studler scored her first goal for the Buckeyes this season to push the Buckeye's lead to two after the first period of play.
In the second period the Mavericks had two power-play opportunities and came close to pushing one through as senior 
Shelby Moteyunas fired a shot from the point that was tipped just wide. MSU evened the shots in the middle period even though OSU had a slight edge of 12-11.
The Buckeyes added a goal early in the third but MSU responded with one of its own on the power play. Freshman 
Hannah Davidson had the puck behind the net and shot the puck off the back of Ohio State goaltender Kassidy Sauve to score her first career goal for the Purple and Gold. Freshman 
Amanda Martin and sophomore and 
Anna Fiegert both were credited with their second assists of the season on the scoring play.
Minnesota State netminder 
Erin Krichiver recorded 36 saves despite the loss. She owns a record of 0-6-1 in 2014-15.
Minnesota State went 1-3 with the extra skater advantage while OSU went 0-4. Ohio State totaled 39 shots on the night compared to 17 for the Mavericks. The Buckeyes outdueled the Mavericks in faceoffs by a narrow margin of 30-24.
The Mavericks will finish off the weekend tomorrow afternoon against Ohio State at All Seasons Arena. The opening faceoff is set for 1:07 p.m.
