Four Third Period Goals by UMD Pushes Bulldogs by Mavericks

Duluth, Minn. --- The Mavericks saw an early third period lead go away quickly as Minnesota Duluth scored four goals to defeat Minnesota State by a score of 6-3 at AMSOIL Arena Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks drop to 0-7-1 overall are 0-5-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play this season. The Bulldogs improve to 6-4-2 and 3-4-1 in the WCHA.

UMD started the scoring right from the get go scoring at 3:46 of the first period as Ashleigh Brykaliuk was able to get one past junior netminder Erin Krichiver. Freshman Nicole Schammel tied up the score off passes from freshmen Hannah Davidson and Emma Wittchow at 9:12 of the opening period for her third goal of the season. The Bulldogs added one more goal before the end of the first to take a lead of 2-1 into the first intermission.

Senior Casey Hirsch evened up the score on the power-play with 4:57 remaining in the middle stanza as Davidson tallied her second assist of the game and freshman Amanda Martin getting credited with the other helper.

MSU took the lead early in the final period as junior Katie Johnson scored off of passes from freshman Elin Johansson and Krichiver. The assist by Krichiver is the first by a goalie at Minnesota State since 2009 when Paige Thunder tallied one against St. Cloud State.

The Bulldogs scored a little over two minutes later to even up the score at three and added the goal ahead goal at 7:30 of the third on the power-play. The Mavericks were unable to recover as UMD added two more goals in the final five minutes of play to win 6-3.

Krichiver made 38 saves on the afternoon and falls to 0-5-1 on the season.

The Mavericks scored their first power-play goal of the season and went 1-2 in the loss while the Bulldogs were 2-7 with the extra skater. MSU totaled 19 shots while UMD tallied 44 of their own.

Minnesota State will return home to All Seasons Arena next weekend as they host Ohio State Friday night and Saturday night. Friday's game is set to begin at 6:07 p.m.
