Olson’s Late Game Heroics Lead to Maverick Victory

Mankato, Minn. –  The Minnesota State women's basketball team beat Central Missouri in last-second fashion Friday night, 70-68, to kickoff its regular season.

Late in the game with 10 seconds left, the game was tied at 68-68 with Central Missouri in control of the ball. Senior guard Ashley Olson was able to steal the ball away and went the length of the court for a fast break layup to put MSU up for good, 70-68, with 0.06 left to play in the game.

In the first half of play, the Mavericks were able to build an early 14-7 advantage over the Jennies with 14:22 left to play in the half. UCM was able to cut its deficit to two with MSU still leading at 17-15. That would be the closest the Jennies got all half as the Mavericks were able to build their lead throughout the rest of the half. Going into halftime the Mavericks were leading 40-26 over the Jennies.

At the break, sophomore guard Sammie Delzotto led all scorers with 11 points to go along with her two assists. Senior guard Aubrey Davis posted six points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, as guards Olson and Britney Scherber each recorded five points in the half.

In the second half, the Jennies were able to cut into the Mavericks halftime lead as UCM battled back to cut their deficit to five with MSU still leading at 49-44 with 11:52 left in the game. The Mavericks were able to extend their lead back to 11 at the nine minute mark in the second half, but that would be the biggest lead MSU had in the rest of the game.

The Jennies were able to inch closer and closer back into the game and ended up tying the game to 68-68 with 10 seconds left to play in the game. MSU was able to take the game at 70-68 after Olson's late game heroics.

Again it was Davis leading the Maverick offense, as she posted another nine points and three rebounds. Scherber added another seven points as Olson tallied another five points to her stat sheet.

Overall, the difference in the game was the Maverick bench, as MSU outscored UCM's bench 27-10. Four Mavericks scored in double-digits in the game, as Davis led the way posting  team-highs with 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists, to go along with her four steals.
