Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota State volleyball team swept the University of Mary on Friday night by the scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-20.
With the win, the Mavericks record improves to 15-9 overall and 11-6 in the conference.
In the first set, the Mavericks built an early 11-6 advantage over the Marauders and were able to sustain their lead throughout the set as MSU won the set, 25-21. Sophomore middle blocker
Krista Hassing led the offensive charge for the Mavericks in the set as she posted five kills with a .444 attack percentage.
In set two, MSU was holding on to a slim lead over U-Mary, 9-8, before the Purple and Gold went on a 7-2 run to make the score 16-10. The Marauders were able fight back and tie the set at 20-20 with the Mavericks, until MSU went on a 5-0 run to finish the set at 25-20. Senior outside hitter
Chandra Honebrink recorded four kills as freshmen
Sydney Powell and
Vikolia Meade added three kills of their own.
In the third and final set, the Mavericks were all tied with the Marauders at 10-10 before MSU was eventually able to pull away from U-Mary to take the set, 25-20. Honebrink and Powell each tallied five kills in the set as Meade pitched in with four kills and junior setter
Ellie Van De Steeg posting 17 assists in the set.
Overall, it was a full team effort for the Mavericks as four players had at least nine kills on the night. Honebrink led the way with 11 kills, Powell and Hassing each tallying 10 kills and Meade adding nine kills to her stat sheet. Van De Steeg finished with a match-high 38 assists as Honebrink and sophomore defensive specialist
Rissi McNallan each recorded 10 digs for the Mavericks.
The next time the Mavericks hit the court will be Saturday at home, as they will play host to the Minot State. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
