ERIE, Pa. --- Freshman Nicole Schammel scored her second goal of the weekend for the Mavericks but it wasn't enough as they lost to Mercyhurst 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Mercyhurst Ice Center.

With the loss MSU drops to 0-5-1 and are 0-3-1 in WCHA action while Mercyhurst, who has yet to play a conference game, improves to 6-1-1 on the young season.

The Mavericks had their first scoring chance on the power-play as Mercyhurst was called for hooking at 6:15 of the first period, but Minnesota State was unable to connect. Mercyhurst got on the board first after a couple of hooking calls on freshmen Lindsey Coleman and Victoria Lovdal led to a five-on-three opportunity. The Lakers outshot the Mavericks 10-5 and led after one period of play 1-0.

Mercyhurst added its second goal of the game early in the second period as Taylor Accursi was able to connect for the Lakers. Each team failed to connect on their power-play chances in the second period as the two teams went into second intermission with Mercyhurst leading Minnesota State 2-0 holding a 20-6 shot advantage.

Minnesota State would struck back just 56 seconds into the third period. Schammel tallied her team-leading second goal of the season assisted by seniors Casey Hirsch and Shelby Moteyunas to cut the Lakers lead in half. The Mavericks had one last power-play opportunity with 3:53 left in the final stanza, but were unable to produce as the Lakers took the contest by a final score of 2-1.

Junior Erin Krichiver saved 28 out of 30 shots and now has a record of 0-3-1 on the season.

MSU had 9 shots and went 0-4 on the power play while MU went 1-6 with the extra skater.

MSU will continue WCHA play next weekend as they travel to the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday and Sunday. Game time for both contests is set for 3:07 p.m.
