Duluth, Minn. – The Minnesota State volleyball team was swept by #2 Minnesota Duluth Friday night by the scores of 25-15, 29-27 and 25-15.
With the loss, the Mavericks record falls to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in the conference.
In set one, the Mavericks were down 11-9 to the Bulldogs before UMD went on a 6-1 run to make the score 17-10. The Bulldogs never looked back and were able to take set one 25-15. Freshman outside hitter
Sydney Powell led the Mavericks with four kills, while senior outside hitter
Jenna McNallan posted three kills and an impressive .750 attack percentage.
The Mavericks in set two found themselves tied up 10-10 with the Bulldogs midway through the second set. The two teams fought point for point throughout the rest of the set as the Mavericks were still tied at 25-25 with the Bulldogs. In the end, UMD was able to win the set, 29-27. Krista Hassing recorded four kills, as McNallan tallied another three kills, while junior
Ellie Van De Steeg pitched in 11 assists.
In the third and final set, MSU was down early to UMD, 8-2. The Mavericks were able to cut their deficit to four, 16-12, before the Bulldogs went on 5-0 run to make the score 21-12. The Bulldogs went on to win the set 25-15. In the set, Powell led the Mavericks offensively with three kills.
Overall, Powell led all Mavericks with nine kills and five block assists, as McNallan and Hassing each posted seven kills in the match. Van De Steeg added 24 assists to her stat sheet while sophomore libero
Haley Fogarty led MSU with 13 digs. Freshman middle blocker
Vikolia Meade had a team-high seven block assists.
The Mavericks will continue their road trip Saturday, as they will take on St. Cloud State. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
